The Benefits of Going to Prom as a Group

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

When you think of prom, you might think of the traditional romantic date – a guy and a girl; a prom dress and a tux. It’s a great formula for some people, but others would rather relax without the pressures of having to find a date, coordinate outfits and follow all of society’s typical “rules”. Some kids just want to dress up and have fun! If you’re one of them, consider going to prom not with a date, but as a group. There are lots of benefits to ditching the date idea and getting a group of besties together for prom: Everyone in the group is included. In a group, the pressure to choose someone, ask them to prom, hope they say yes, and hope that all of your friends find dates too is enormous. By deciding well before prom to do away with dates, each person can stop stressing, and relax knowing that everyone in their social group will be included. No Promposal Pressure! If you check out YouTube you’ll find a ton of real life recordings of crazy promposals. There are hand-painted signs, guys serenading girls on porches, and still other plans that are way crazier, all with […]

Weather Proof Your Prom Look

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

What time of year does your school hold prom? Most are held in the spring, but depending on where you live, that could mean weather of all different kinds. No matter how warm, cold, humid, hot, wet or dry your town happens to be when prom comes around, you can take steps to weather proof your look and be ready to step out in style. When in Doubt, Choose an Updo One of the most at-risk parts of your prom ensemble is your hair. Humidity, rain and wind can all make luxe locks fall flat. If your style involves cascades of beautiful curls, beware. They are the first to fall victim to bad weather, depending on how your hair naturally behaves. Updos, on the other hand, can be controlled with additional pins, more mousse and a truckload of hairspray. Brave the flowing look if you dare, otherwise choose an updo you love. Manage Your Makeup Accordingly Humidity wreaks havoc with heavy makeup. If the weather is hot and muggy in your town, go for a lighter, more natural application of makeup, and a waterproof mascara. Bring extra everything in case you need to do touch ups throughout the evening. Consider […]

Proms are expensive – it’s a fact. You pay for your tickets, the perfect prom dress, shoes, accessories, hair, makeup, transportation, photography and more. If there is a way you can save, we want you to know about it! Many teens will have their nails professionally manicured for prom, but this is definitely an area you can take care of yourself, saving at least $25 – $30 or more. You’ve probably been giving yourself great home nail care for years. Trimming your nails, gently clipping the loose bits of skin before they become painful hang nails, and generally keeping your hands and fingers clean and dirt-free are all good places to start. Did you know that your hands also need exfoliation just like your face does? You can use a commercial exfoliating skin scrub, but it’s easy to make your own sugar scrub from ingredients at home (see Pinterest for 100s of home recipes for sugar scrubs!). Exfoliate your hands several times per week, especially during […]

Prom Prep: Ready for Your First Manicure?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

Is prom your first big formal occasion? Do you have your prom dress, hairstyle and makeup all chosen and planned out? What about your nails? Many teens will have their first real, professional manicure for prom. While your nail artist will (literally!) hold your hand and guide you through it, we know it’s nice to be prepared before you try something new, so we put together some first manicure advice to help get you ready before the big day! Your Nail Appointment Schedule your nail appointment in advance as prom days can be high volume with long waits – know that you’ll probably spend 45 minutes to an hour at the salon or a basic manicure, so allow plenty of time to get ready afterwards or make the appointment a day or two before the dance. Choose Your Polish When you check in, usually the clerk or cashier will point you to a wall of shimmering nail colors and tell you to choose the one that you want. You will likely have to actually take the bottle off the wall and give it to your nail artist (who may think you’ve done this before), so give this some real thought […]

How Much Does Prom Cost?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

Does your school host prom in spring? Let’s hope the holidays were good to you cash-wise, because attending can mean a big investment. You might want to ask your parents to leave the room for this…USA Today says that the average American family spent $600 on prom in 2017, but in some cases, they spent much more. The biggest factor that influences what an average family spends on prom seems to be geography, according to the Yahoo Style’s Prom Across America Survey of over 1700 respondents. The highest reported expenses were in the northeast where the average was $699 and change, while the lowest was $610 in the Midwest. Of course, these figures are just the average cost of attending prom per person. Some prom dresses alone cost $750 or more, so the choices that each teen makes have a big impact on the bottom line. What expenses typically go in to a prom bill? Tickets – can easily be $300 – $400 per couple , but it depends heavily on where you live and what school you attend. Some tickets are as low as $30 per couple! Additionally, some pairs will split the bill, while sometimes one or the other […]

Prom Planning 101 – Choosing a Theme

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

So, you’ve been asked to serve on your school’s prom committee and your fellow students are trusting you to make this the best prom ever! The first thing you’ve been asked to do is choose a theme. Where on Earth (or beyond) do you start? A prom’s theme influences everything from decorations to food to prom dresses and accessories, so it pays to choose wisely. Start by thinking about the resources you have. Is there a school budget or allowance to spend? Did it come with any instructions about how you are allowed to spend it? You have to have a realistic idea of what you can buy before you can start making any decisions, so ask your principal, advisor or administrator to explain to you (at the very beginning) how you will fund your ideas once they are finalized. Next, sit down with the rest of your prom committee and brainstorm. This is the time to go wild with your ideas. Write every single idea down, whether it sounds amazing or crazy. Your list might include a royal prom, astronaut dance, wild animal kingdom bash, diamonds are forever shindig – you name it. There are no bad ideas […]

Are you practicing your prom style and wondering how to get model-perfect eyelashes? If you’re like most gals newer to wearing makeup, you’ve probably heard of fake lashes and mascara, but you don’t really know which, if any, you’ll need for prom. How can you choose between them and get the look you want at a price you can afford? You’re in luck – we’ve got everything you need to know about styling your lashes for prom right here! The Big Three There are three main options for getting great lashes – professional application, DIY application or choosing mascara instead. These options range in price from just a few dollars to several hundred depending on what you buy, where you buy them, and who you pay (or don’t pay) to apply them. The right one for you depends on your goals and your budget, along with how much time you have to invest. Professional Application A professional makeup stylist can apply the longest lasting, highest quality and most natural-looking lashes, but the price can be steep. Most will apply each lash individually for the most natural look, which can take 90 minutes or more, so if you choose this route, […]

Prom Style: Having Difficult Conversations with Your Stylist

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Prom

While it is totally okay to do your own hair and makeup for prom, not everyone is an artist with hairspray or with a blush brush. Many prom-goers will hire professional hair stylists and makeup artists to round out their perfect prom style. Have you ever gone to a salon, though, only to leave totally disappointed with your new ‘do? When did you know that it wasn’t going right? Why didn’t you speak up?
